As pressure on the local health services increased during the latest wave of the pandemic major elective orthopaedic surgery slowed and eventually ceased temporarily. The success of the UK vaccination program and the latest lockdown is providing hope that elective surgery will resume after Easter thus facilitating the treatment of the very many patients whose assessment and surgical treatment has been delayed during the crisis.

Nick Bowman organised and with help from Paul Gibb & James Young provided an update on Knee ligament surgery for the orthopaedic trainees on the South Thames Orthopaedic training scheme. This training afternoon was provided remotely using zoom and was chaired by Raghbir Khakha from Guy’s Hospital in London.

Convened by Henry Bourke and Ciaran McGarvey this biennial international meeting was held virtually as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Speakers included Don Shelbourne from Indianapolis and Chris Kaeding from Ohio, both influential leaders in cruciate ligament surgery and in the collection and publishing of outcome data. UK faculty included James Robinson, Tim Spalding, Andy Williams and Adrian Wilson.

The British Orthopaedic Association published best practice guidelines for the management of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries in collaboration with the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) and the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA). Paul Gibb was a member of the team responsible for drawing up the guidelines, a team which was very ably chaired by Mr Sanjeev Anand from Leeds.

The September meeting was the first held virtually using microsoft teams. Knee surgeons from London and the South of England attended (including Mr Yiannis Pengas from Truro) to discuss clinical cases and listen to an expert guest lecture on Revision Knee Replacement kindly provided by Mr Benjamin Bloch of the Nottingham Elective Orthopaedic Service (NEOS).

This meeting was the first national knee surgical meeting to be run during the Coronavirus pandemic and therefore the first to be run virtually. Convened by Matt Dawson and David Elson the invited faculty included experts in osteotomy surgery from Europe and the UK.
