Mako Robotic assisted knee replacement

Paul Gibb travelled to the Hôpital Kirchberg in Luxembourg to train in the use of the Stryker Mako robotic arm whilst performing both partial and total knee replacement. The teaching faculty included Dr Philippe Wilmes from the Hôpital Kirchberg, Mr Jonathan Phillips from the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and Mr Saman Harriot from the Princess Grace Hospital.   The Mako system utilises preoperative CT based planning combined with intraoperative mapping and computer navigation.  A three dimensional virtual knee model is generated which assists the operating surgeon in accurately sizing and positioning the implants.  A haptic robotic arm then moderates and partly controls the operating surgeons movements.
