Standard risk assessments are employed to ensure that any patients thought to be at increased risk of deep vein thrombosis or venous thrombo-embolism are protected appropriately. All patients receive anti-embolism stockings and patients thought to be at increased risk either because of their age, because of concurrent medical problems, or because they are undergoing major surgery, i.e. knee replacement also receive chemicals to thin the blood and/or foot pumps applied to the feet that ensure that blood continues circulating through their legs whilst they rest and sleep.
